Jewish news in Asia gains a steady foothold
Jewish Times Asia is celebrating five years of Jewish news in Asia with the April 2011 issue. The title has become the region’s primary platform for news gathering, event highlighting and community awareness.
“We are also now the choice for diplomatic news for Israel’s embassies and organisations here in Asia,” comments Philip Jay, Publisher and Founder. “To be accepted amongst diplomats takes times to gain their respect and trust and our paper has managed to provide balanced reporting. The paper has certainly increased its editorial platform.” “In the early years it was challenging to find local news stories, but now we are providing news and content for Jewish media groups outside Asia,” he added. Asia is set with Jewish roots and heritage but the need to launch or develop a regional newspaper did not exist until recently. There was no previous titles or points of comparison, Jewish Times Asia was created from scratch. Keeping with a specifi c objective and style for the paper, Jay wanted to provide local Jewish news content not only to local residents but equally to thousands of travellers and vacationers that come into Asia. Apart from local news round-ups, the paper covers a regular business news section, art and culture, and a balance of topical features, articles and interviews. “People who visit Asia are still generally surprised that we have synagogues, kosher restaurants, shops and centres for Jewish life,” said Jay. Jewish Times Asia is unique in its editorial independence. It reports on all communities in the region and maintains a balanced and unbiased outlook, recognising each group’s contribution to Jewish life in Asia. Asia has a very diverse and mixed spiritual community. More recently the paper became available on its website for an on-line read and subscribers can receive an emailed copy in a handy fl ipbook format. This has increased its global appeal so now everybody can keep in touch with Jewish news in Asia around the world and around the clock. Commenting on the five years, “We have reached a significfant milestone, lets see if we can be as signifi cant in the next five to ten,” Jay ended.
