Taiwan educators to be educated about the Holocaust E-mail
Israel’s representative office in Taiwan – the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei – is planning to send local educators to Israel to learn about the history behind the Holocaust.

The initiative has been developed in response to a highschool parade by local swastikaclad students that snowballed into an international incident in December last year.

A group of local high-school students from Kuangfu Senior High School in Hsinchu participated in a school-sanctioned parade dressed in Nazi uniforms and brandishing banners decorated with swastikas. The parade also featured large tanks made of cardboard.

Asher Yarden, Israel’s top envoy to Taiwan, told local media that his office is now working closely with Taiwan’s Ministry of Education on a soon-tobe- launched programme to send selected educators to Israel to gain a deeper understanding of the Holocaust and Nazi Germany to pass the knowledge on to their students.

He said Taiwan’s Holocaust education was apparently lacking, resulting in last December’s incident.
