Purim throughout the region E-mail

Jewish communities throughout Asia celebrated Purim with displays of colourful costumes and an atmosphere of joyousness.

Communities came together to read the Megillah and again for parades and carnivals.

Chinese government conducts DNA testing on Kaifeng Jews E-mail

Judaism is not one of the five officially recognised religions today in China yet there are families who still identify themselves as Youtai (Jewish) on all official government documents.  The legitimacy of this claim, linking modern families to the Kaifeng Jews, has been a source of debate for many years.

On the face, the Youtai appear to look no different from their neighbours, almost entirely “Han Chinese”, but these families hold onto an identity very deeply rooted in their past.

Shanghai beginning to rebuild the spirit of its Jewish past E-mail

Work has begun on a renovation project designed to restore Shanghai’s Jewish Quarter. The Living Bridge Corporation is directing this project aimed at incorporating urban development with the restoration of the historic Jewish community.

Ohel Moishe Synagogue will become a major tourist attraction and home of the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Memorial. It is expected that work on Ohel Moishe will be completed by July 2007.

Israel shows off its stripes in Thailand E-mail

Thailand's Chiang Mai Night Safari will soon welcome three Israeli zebras. The Thai safari intends to purchase a total of twenty zebras from the Ramat Gan Safari.

Popular Korean author denounced E-mail

The Simon Wiesenthal Center denounced the recent published work of Korean author, Professor Lee Won-bok. In a book in his tremendously popular series, Monnara Iunnara (Distant Countries and Neighboring Countries), Won-bok creates anti-Semitic cartoons reminiscent of Nazi propaganda.
