New beast on the Asian Kosher menu? E-mail

Kosher diners in New York and other American cities have been enjoying kosher bison for years, and now, says Rabbi Shlomo  Amar, diners in Jerusalem can as well. The ruling declares that the short-horned water buffalo native to Israel are kosher.

But shortly after the news hit, Rabbi Yosef Elyashuv, another leading authority, declared that as there was no tradition of the animal ever being schected and consumed in Israel, the animal could not be kosher.
