First Hebrew story published in Vietnamese |
Israel’s Uri Orlev has the honour of having his work chosen to be the first Hebrew book to be translated into Vietnamese. The project has been initiated by Vietnam’s Kim Dong Publisher. Granny Knits will be translated by Ms. Sabine Huynh, a Vietnamese-born Israeli and illustrated by Ms. Huynh’s brother, Albert Huynh, making this project a true genesis between the Vietnamese and the Israelis. On 20 August, a joint teleconference was coordinated between Israel and Hanoi by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that brought together the press and ministry official with the publisher who was present at the Embassy of Israel in Hanoi. Both author and illustrator were on the line from Jerusalem. Author Uri Orlev was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1931 and spent the early years of World War II in the Warsaw Ghetto. He was later sent to Bergen-Belsen along with his brother. They survived and were reunited with their father in Israel prior to its statehood. |
